Alpine Strawberries are truly a good thing that comes in a small package. The berries of Alexandria Alpine Strawberries are much longer than they are wide and do not weigh more than 1/10 of an ounce. They are a bit tart and not very juicy until prepared. Macerating these berries with 1-2 Tbsp of sugar makes a world of difference. These berries have a genuine strawberry flavor that is even present in their small, edible flowers. Fragaria vesca is a reliable producer and develops fruit from June to September. Alexandria Alpine Strawberry has been in constant production since 1964, when it was introduced by Park Seed Company.
Alpine Strawberry Care
Plant these strawberries in full sun to part shade, in soil that is well draining and fertile. Since Alpine Strawberries are a perennial food plant, ensure they are in a spot with excellent drainage even during the winter. Since this type of Strawberry does not produce runners, it can be planted closer together and even be used as a ground cover in garden beds that do not receive foot traffic. Regular fruit picking will encourage these plants to continue flower production and extend the harvest. Mulch the plants with 2-3 inches of finely shredded leaves or straw to keep mud from splashing the berries and retain moisture in the soil.
Growing Alpine Strawberry
Alexandria is day-neutral strawberry, meaning it produces small amounts of berries from June to September. Typically the harvest yield is larger after the first year and declines at 3-4 years. Place each plant 10 inches apart on center to give them room to develop. This is not a variety that produces runners. The overall height and width of Alexandria Strawberry is 12 inches.
Alpine Strawberries are perfect for growing in a small container garden or a hanging basket. Make sure the container has excellent drainage, and the potting mix you use is soil based with plenty of perlite added. Watering in containers will be an everyday task during the hottest parts of the summer and should be done whenever the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry to the touch.
Watering Alpine Strawberry
Strawberries prefer consistently moist and also well-drained soil. Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry. Mulching with organic compost or straw will help to retain moisture in the soil and cool the soil during the summer months.
Feeding Alpine Strawberry
Amend garden soil with 1-2 inches of organic compost before planting. Container-grown plants will benefit from fertilizing with either a diluted fish emulsion or liquid seaweed formula once a month during the summer.
