Both plants have large flower spikes (up to 4 inches long) that bloom earlier and longer than any other variety. Plant these Mediterranean herbs together for a cooling mix of white and blue, or individually alongside other sun-loving perennials for a long-blooming color display. Big Time Duet Lavender Care
Lavender is not fussy about the texture or richness of the soil. In fact, soil that seems too dry, stoney, or nutrient deficient is perfectly able to support Lavender growth. Amend heavy clay soil with plenty of compost and some coarse sand to provide sufficient drainage. Locations that are prone to seasonal flooding should be avoided. A balanced granular fertilizer can be applied early in the spring every few years. Lavender plants prefer a neutral or alkaline pH, and will struggle in acidic soil.
Lightly prune Lavender twice a year to keep the shape mounded and compact. In the early spring, trim back spent flowers and foliage to just above the woody part of the branches. Avoid cutting into the woodiest part of the plant, as the whole branch could die back, disfiguring the plant. Lightly cut back the stems again after the flowers have finished in late summer.
