‘Bonfire’ Cushion Spurge lights the garden all season long with the evolving color palette of its foliage and flowers. This is perhaps the most colorful spurge you can find, and an unbeatable choice for all-season color. The deep reds of the top foliage hover above darker greens beneath, and turn to rich burgundy as the season progresses. Bracts of yellow flowers add another dimension of color for several weeks in late spring.

The tidy mounded growth habit acts much like its namesake, wishing a soft, cushion-like appearance and fiery color scheme. Use this spurge to add constant, deep color to garden beds, walkways, and even containers on patios. This is an easy-care perennial in Zones 5-9. ‘Bonfire’ Cushion Spurge is deer- and rabbit-resistant, as well as tolerant of heat, drought, and salt.

Bonfire Cushion Spurge Care

Always use gloves when handling this plant, as the sap can irritate the skin and eyes. Cushion Spurge does best in full or part sun conditions. Full sun is ideal for growing it in Zone 5, and part sun is best for warmer Zones.

It is generally very easy to care for, with low water needs and a wide range of ideal soil pH. Cut back to about 4” after spring flowering to keep the tidy cushion shape and prevent splitting.

Bonfire Cushion Spurge Spacing

Space cushion spurge 18-24” apart from other plants. Plant it alone for a rounded architectural addition to a large container.
