A true tropical indulgence for warm-climate gardens, Brewster Lychee bears heavy clusters of glossy, deep-red fruit with fragrant, translucent flesh that’s sweet with a lively tang. Shimmering evergreen leaves lend a polished, exotic look year-round, while the summer crop turns patios and courtyards into a tasting room for fresh lychee, sorbets, and cocktails. In-ground it forms a handsome canopy; in large containers it stays compact enough for decks and sunny atriums.
Brewster Lychee Tree Care
Plant in full sun with protection from hot, desiccating winds. Choose a well-drained, slightly acidic soil (roughly pH 5.5–6.5); avoid salty irrigation and waterlogged spots—lychee roots need air as much as moisture. Keep soil evenly moist, especially from flowering through fruit fill; deep, infrequent watering is better than frequent sips. Mulch 2–3 inches over the root zone to moderate temperature and conserve moisture, keeping mulch a few inches off the trunk.
Feed modestly in spring and midsummer with a balanced citrus/avocado-type fertilizer that emphasizes potassium for fruit quality; avoid heavy nitrogen flushes that push leaves over blooms. Prune lightly after harvest to shape and remove crossing or wind-damaged wood—heavy cuts can delay fruiting. Young trees are cold-tender; protect below ~32°F and avoid sites that frost.
Brewster is generally self-fertile but sets heavier with another lychee nearby to overlap bloom. Best performance in humid, frost-free regions (approx. USDA Zones 9–11) or as a container specimen moved indoors for cold snaps.
Brewster Lychee Tree Spacing
As an in-ground specimen, allow 15–20 feet from buildings and other trees for light penetration and air flow; for small orchard rows, space 18–25 feet on center with rows 20–25 feet apart.
In containers, start with a sturdy 20–24″+ diameter pot with excellent drainage; position planters 3–4 feet apart for access and to reduce pest/disease pressure.
