Buffalosteak’ is an indeterminate type that produces an abundance of meaty, red, flavorful, 6-7 oz. beefsteak tomatoes throughout the season. Earlier and more productive than similar hybrid varieties, it has excellent disease resistance and high yield. The fruit matures in 75 to 80 days. Vigorous vines produce a bountiful crop of delicious, flavorful, red tomatoes. This tomato is a great slicer for sandwiches and salads, and for enjoying fresh off the vine. ‘Buffalosteak’ tomatoes have very few seeds, a flattened beefsteak shape, and slight ribbing.
‘Buffalosteak’ Tomato Care
Plant this tomato outside once all danger of frost has passed. Select a planting site with a well-draining, rich loam in full sun. The soil should be amended with plenty of organic matter such as garden compost. If you are unable to easily move your fingers through the soil in either your garden or in containers, the soil is too compact and needs amending.
You can prune by cutting off the lowest suckers (auxiliary shoots between stems and leaves) to allow for air circulation and adequate sun exposure. Removing a few suckers produces larger fruit. Tomatoes are heavy feeders, so water and fertilize them consistently throughout the season.
Growing ‘Buffalosteak’ Tomato
Plant in full sun. The fruit matures in 75 – 80 days. Plants grow 5-6 ft tall and up to 3 ft wide so space individual plants 24- 36 inches apart.
Provide growing support with a tomato cage or garden stakes; be sure to keep fruits off the ground. Apply a couple inches of natural mulch, which warms the soil, holds moisture in, and helps reduce weeds.
Watering ‘Buffalosteak’ Tomato
Provide an inch or two of water per week, Be sure to water the roots slowly and deeply, sometimes daily, as summer temperatures increase. Water in the morning and avoid splashing the leaves. If your ‘Buffalosteak’ Tomato is planted in a container, it may have to be watered more frequently; check soil moisture often.
Feeding ‘Buffalosteak’ Tomato
Give your tomato plants a healthy foundation by planting them in soil that is rich in organic matter, particularly using garden compost. Tomatoes are heavy feeders and fast growers, so feeding throughout the season will produce great results. You can use a diluted liquid fertilizer specially formulated for tomatoes such as NPK 4-6-3 or NPK 3-4-6, applying a couple times per month. Always water plant roots thoroughly before applying any type of fertilizer to avoid root burning.
