Genetic mutations in plants often result in some of the most desirable traits. Euphorbia lactea “White Ghost” is one such nursery-bred plant, combining all the best qualities of its parent with a unique twist. This succulent cactus is easy to grow and adapts to various conditions while showcasing an exceptionally pale greenish-white color due to its very low chlorophyll levels. Commonly known as Ghost Cactus, Mottled Spurge, Candlestick Cactus, or Milkstripe Euphorbia, this native of South America is truly striking.

Best Locations For Growing White Ghost Cactus

The White Ghost Cactus makes an eye-catching decoration for entryways or bright corners of living rooms or offices. Its vertical growth habit provides a stunning focal point, whether displayed as a floor plant when mature or as a tabletop feature early in its life. Like all Euphorbia varieties, the White Ghost Cactus is poisonous and should be kept away from children and pets. The sap can cause skin irritation, especially in sensitive individuals, so handle the plant with care.

White Ghost Cactus Sunlight Requirements

Bright, direct light is ideal for a healthy and sturdy White Ghost Cactus. Insufficient light can cause the plant to become leggy as it stretches toward the nearest light source. If you don’t have a south or west-facing window, use a grow light set to 12-16 hours a day to ensure optimal growth.

White Ghost Cactus Care

Use a potting mix with a 1:1 ratio of peat-free potting soil to perlite or sharp sand for excellent drainage. Overwatering is a common issue, especially during winter when growth slows. Soil that remains wet for too long or waterlogged roots can make the plant more vulnerable to pests like scale insects and mealybugs, which are difficult to treat. Wear gloves or use protective gear when handling and repotting the cactus, as even the smaller spines can be irritating.

Watering White Ghost Cactus

Succulent cacti prefer the “soak and drain” method of watering. During spring and summer, water every 2-3 weeks, soaking the soil until excess water drains from the pot. Ensure that the pot drains completely, and empty any saucers or cache pots promptly. Reduce watering to once a month during fall and winter, and adjust for less frequent watering year-round if the plant is in a lower light situation.

Fertilizing White Ghost Cactus

This succulent rarely needs additional fertilizing. If you choose to feed it, apply a diluted fertilizer at half the strength recommended on the label during the active growing period of spring and summer.
