Hydrangea paniculata ‘Hpopr013’, also known as Candelabra™ Hydrangea, has a superior form and four fabulous seasons of interest. Its enormous candle-like flowers emerge crisp white in late summer and mature to rosy red. The stems are sturdy, ensuring the large flower panicles never droop. This shrub is deciduous and when it loses its leaves, bright red stems carry on the show in the winter. When it was first introduced in 2017, Garden Center Magazine awarded it a Retailer’s Choice Award.
Candelabra is an upright shrub that reaches a height and spread of 4 – 5 feet. It is exceptionally cold hardy to -40 Fahrenheit and is resistant to diseases and pests, unlike other hydrangea varieties. Candelabra is less likely to wilt in the summer than most hydrangeas because it has small leaves, which demand less water. It eventually develops drought tolerance once the roots are established. As a bonus, its flowers are fragrant!
Candelabra™ Hydrangea Care
Plant Candelabra in full sun to partial shade, although it performs best with at least 6 hours of direct sun. It prefers moist, fertile, acidic soil that drains well. This hydrangea is adaptable and can grow in clay, sand and alkaline soils. Do not let the soil dry out during its first summer; plants located in full sun will need more frequent supplemental water. Feed in the spring with a slow release fertilizer, and topdress around the base with a thick layer of high quality compost.
This hydrangea does not require much pruning; however, it can be shaped in early spring by trimming up to one-third of its volume. It blooms on new growth and therefore doesn’t need to be pruned in late summer like other hydrangea varieties.
Candelabra™ Hydrangea Spacing
When grown as a hedge, space these shrubs approximately 4 feet apart. Accent shrubs can be spaced at least 5 feet from other shrubs to allow a gap between plants. Candelabra can be grown in a large container, but will likely not reach its mature size there and should eventually be transplanted to the ground.
