The Cloud 9 Flowering Dogwood welcomes in spring by bursting into bloom. The four-petaled white flowers open flat and expose the yellow stamens, and two of the opposite petals have dark pink accents on the tips. The flowers grow in 3-inch wide clusters. Also known as Cornus florida, this beauty blooms from mid-April through mid-May. The flowers mature into glossy red fruit that attracts a wide array of birds, while the green leaves turn scarlet red during the fall.
Dogwood is a deciduous plant with spreading horizontal branches. The flower bunches are a draw for pollinators, while songbirds will stop by to eat the berries later in the summer. This is a large plant that will reach about 22 feet tall, so it can provide color and privacy when used in a yard or landscape. The Cloud 9 Flowering Dogwood grows as a perennial in USDA zones 5 through 9.
Cloud 9 Flowering Dogwood Care
This plant requires full sun to part shade, and the ideal area will receive at least 4 to 6 hours of sunlight. Soil should be fertile and moist but well-drained. This plant prefers an acidic to neutral pH. Water weekly or when the top few inches of soil dry out.
Dogwoods are not heavy feeders but top-dress the soil with organic compost or mulch in the spring to encourage new growth. Remove damaged growth as necessary, but Dogwoods tend to maintain a desirable shape naturally.
Cloud 9 Flowering Dogwood Spacing
The Cloud 9 Flowering Dogwood is an upright deciduous perennial that will grow 18 to 22 feet tall and wide. Plant shrubs 18 feet apart to create a full planting while still allowing each plant room to thrive.
