Every landscape benefits from little bit of white for color contrast and evening interest. Diana Camellia (Camellia sasanqua ‘TDN 1110’) bursts with delicate and bright white blooms each fall in zones 7 through 9. The flowers are an elegant contrast to the shrub’s evergreen leaves. Since Diana Camellia grows to nearly 10 feet high, it makes a great privacy plant all year, either on its own or in a group as a gorgeous white hedge.
Diana is more compact than some camellias, but equally loaded with ruffled, double white blossoms against dark green foliage. The shrubs are perfect as pretty hedges for wind breaks as well. It’s also looks gorgeous as a highlighted plant at the back of a bed or plant grouping.
Diana Camellia Care
Place your camellia in soil that drains well and give it full sun to lots of sun mixed with afternoon shade. Pruning Diana Camellia should be done in late spring after it has finished blooming. If you love to prune, you can plant this camellia against a wall or terrace and trim it into an espalier shape. You can also simply shape the plant once the flowers die off. Just remove dead branches and shorten the shrub’s lower branches to encourage upright growth.
This camellia has a medium growth rate, eventually reaching its mature height of 10 feet and a width of up to 8 feet. Water Diana Camellia regularly, especially in its first few years. In spring, add an acid-forming azalea or camellia fertilizer. When planting Diana Camellia, remember its mature height and spread.
Diana Camellia Spacing
Be sure to space it nearly 6 to 8 feet from structures or other plants. For hedges, space your camellias a little closer together at 6 feet apart, center on center.
