From Herbert Oudshoorn of the Netherlands comes a very compact Joe-Pye, a purported hybrid of Eupatorium maculatum ‘Atropurpureum’ and Eupatorium rugosum. The resulting Eupatorium ‘Phantom’ is the shortest and densest Joe-Pye we’ve ever trialed, maturing for us at just 4′ tall x 4′ wide. The diminutive stalks are topped in August with typical sprays of lavender flowers…enjoyed by low-flying butterflies as well as cats, who also enjoy low-flying butterflies.
