Fizzy Mizzy™ Sweetspire (Itea virginica) is a small shrub with green foliage and upright stalks covered with white flowers. It blooms in late spring/early summer, then in autumn the leaves turn burgundy and red. The flowers have a sweet, light fragrance.

This Sweetspire is deer resistant, and the sweet-smelling flowers attract pollinators. Because it is so small, it can be used in a number of ways; as a specimen plant, border, edging, container, ground cover, mass planting, or in the landscape. This is a deciduous shrub native to the Eastern United States and is hardy from zone 5-9.

Fizzy Mizzy Sweetspire Care

Fizzy Mizzy™ Sweetspire will grow in anything from full sun to full shade, although you won’t get as many flowers or as pretty a fall foliage without at least some direct sunlight. At planting, and each spring, fertilize the plant with a slow-release fertilizer made for shrubs and trees. If the plant is in a container, fertilize with a water-soluble fertilizer monthly for best results. Fizzy Mizzy™ Sweetspire thrives in wet to moist soil but is also drought tolerant after it is established.

Do not prune Fizzy Mizzy™ Sweetspire until spring growth is showing. Prune out dead branches and leave the rest of the shrub as it stands. Mulch with 2 inches of mulch to help retain moisture.

Fizzy Mizzy Sweetspire Spacing

This sweetspire shrub is compact and tidy and grows 2-3 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide. Spacing should be easy to remember since it is 2-3 feet as well.
