The Flavorfest strawberry is a standout performer, noteworthy for its fruit characteristics and disease resistance. Attractive, white, five-petaled flowers in May give way to fruits that have an excellent flavor profile. The large, plump berries of the Flavorfest strawberry appear in bountiful quantities and are stellar for fresh eating, jam, and freezing. This cultivar offers extreme disease resistance, making it a top-notch choice for organic growers, whether in the backyard or on a professional level. Flavorfest is an early mid-season, Junebearing type of strawberry.

Flavorfest Strawberry Care

The ideal planting time for strawberries is spring; they can even go into the ground weeks before the last frost. Position the Flavorfest strawberry in full sunlight and space multiple plants 7-12 inches apart. When planting, set the crowns even with soil level. To achieve more vigorous root growth, snip off the first flush of flowers following planting.

Cover the strawberries with mulch in late fall after several hard frosts. Once growth appears in spring, pull the mulch back from the greenery but leave it over the root zone.

Growing Flavorfest Strawberry

The Flavorfest strawberry will produce some flowers and fruit the first year following planting, but maximum yield can be expected the second year. Pinching off the first-year flowers will help the plant roots become established and ensure greater returns the next year.

In containers, plan for no more than 3 plants per square foot of soil surface. Snip off runners as they appear to force the plant to devote energy to fruiting. In general, container-grown strawberries will require more frequent watering; water whenever the soil an inch below the soil surface is dry to the touch.

Watering Flavorfest Strawberry

Flavorfest strawberries benefit from regular moisture. In general, these plants require 1-2 inches of water weekly through rainfall or supplemental irrigation. Time all watering for early in the day so that the foliage dries quickly during the day.

Feeding Flavorfest Strawberry

The Flavorfest is a particularly vigorous cultivar, so avoid excessive nitrogen fertilization. Mix a general fertilizer with a 1-2-1 NPK ratio into the soil at planting, and apply no other fertilizer the first year. In subsequent years, fertilize the strawberry plants after the final harvest.
