Grassland Sedge is an ideal alternative to a lawn or other water-guzzling ground cover. The perfectly mounded shape combined with the flowing foliage makes this no-nonsense ornamental grass appealing in areas that require xeric or fire-resistant plantings. Carex divulsa originates from Europe and is more versatile than the California native Carex tumulicola. Grassland sedge remains evergreen and has a short period of flowering early in the summer. It has a wide growing range from zones 5-9.
Grassland Sedge is a great solution for hillside erosion planting, adding a long season of interest. Use it to soften up the hard lines of a paved walkway or retaining wall. The fine foliage remains deep green year-round, enhancing any bed it is planted in. Low maintenance should be this plant’s middle name. Other than a seasonal trim and occasional supplemental watering, Grassland Sedge will be the easiest plant in your garden.
Grassland Sedge Grass Care
Grassland Sedge grows well in full sun to deep shade and is not fussy about soil type as long as it drains well year-round. Regular watering will keep this ornamental grass lush and full, although periods of drought or heat are not an issue. Keep each plant mulched with 1-2 inches of compost or finely shredded arborist chips to help conserve moisture in the soil while suppressing weeds during the growing season. Fertilizing is rarely necessary for grass plants, and they will happily grow in nutritionally poor and rocky soil. Grassland Sedge also tolerates light or occasional foot traffic and can be mowed and treated as a tall growing lawn.
Cool-season grasses typically only require cutting back early in the spring in the cooler end of the growing range. This grass is evergreen in the warmer USDA zones and rarely needs much pruning. To keep individual plants looking tidy, only cut back damaged foliage and up to one-third of the total density.
Dividing Sedges is easy to do and will reinvigorate the clump when done regularly every 3-4 years. Divide plants as they resume growth in the spring and keep them well watered through the growing season until they are established.
