Helenium Hayday™️ Red Sneezeweed is an excellent perennial selection to deliver vivid red, daisy-like flowers in the garden. It is one of the best-loved pollinator plants in the garden while being deer resistant. Lobed, petaled blooms are held high above the foliage on strong stems on this compact, long-blooming, desirable Helenium cultivar.
Hayday™ Red Sneezeweed is grown in Hardiness Zone 5-9, to heights and widths of 14-18 inches. Excellent in sunny garden locations, its size is not overwhelming so it can be tucked in areas of your garden for a long-lasting splash of rich red color with prominent center discs. It makes a great cut flower with an extended vase life.
Hayday™ Red Sneezeweed Care
Plant this sneezeweed in a full sun location, in well-draining soil, well amended with garden compost to retain moisture. When newly planted, give Hayday™ Red Sneezeweed about an inch of water per week–do not let the soil dry out. Hayday™ Red Sneezeweed benefits from a well-balanced organic fertilizer applied in early spring; water thoroughly before and after fertilization to prevent root burn. Spread 2 inches of organic compost around the planting site, and work it into the soil to increase nutrients, water retention, and fertility.
To promote a bushier habit, pinch a few stems of the plant in early spring. Deadheading spent flowers is recommended throughout the summer to extend flowering and keep a tidy appearance. Once the growing season has ended in fall, cut the entire plant back to a few inches above ground to prepare for winter dormancy. Applying a light layer of organic mulch at this time will help keep roots insulated during winter months. You can split Hayday™ Red Sneezeweed by division after it’s a few years old.
Hayday™ Red Sneezeweed Spacing
Create a gorgeous color effect when mass planting Hayday™ Red Sneezeweed in large drifts. It is also lovely in a pollinator garden or at the edges of a rain garden or swale. Space plants 14-18 inches apart when planting in a garden bed to allow for full mature size.
