Hot Chana® Japanese Maple is prized for its constantly shifting foliage color, delivering a layered red display that evolves all season. It emerges bright red in spring, deepens to a rich chocolate-red, then transitions to a smoky green interior while fresh red growth continues at the tips. By fall, the entire 8–15 foot tall, 4–6 foot wide tree ignites in brilliant scarlet. Unlike many grafted varieties, this own-root selection offers stronger vigor and fewer concerns about suckers or graft incompatibility.
Because Acer palmatum ‘JWW7’ grows on its own roots, planting depth is less fussy and long-term performance tends to be more consistent. Its narrow width makes it especially useful in tighter spaces where traditional Japanese maple forms may spread too wide. The naturally upright habit gives structure to foundations, patio plantings, and mixed borders without constant shaping. Plant in full sun to part sun for the strongest color development; in warmer climates, provide afternoon shade to minimize leaf scorch. Soil should be well-drained and slightly acidic, ideally with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Dig a wide planting hole and backfill with native soil to encourage outward root growth rather than settling roots into overly amended pockets. Water deeply after planting and maintain steady moisture during the first growing season, allowing the top few inches of soil to dry slightly between waterings once established. Apply a slow-release fertilizer for woody plants in early spring if growth stagnates.
Minimal pruning is best. Remove dead or crossing branches in late winter before bud break, and avoid frequent trimming that can disrupt its natural form. In colder zone 5 locations, apply a 2–3 inch mulch layer over the root zone and choose a site protected from strong winter winds. Container-grown specimens should be insulated or moved to a sheltered location in winter.

Space each maple 4–6 feet apart in the landscape if planting in a staggered row, or allow the full 6-foot spread when using as a specimen. For container growing, begin with a pot at least 18–24 inches wide with excellent drainage.
