Ithemba™ Clematis is a compact clematis that flowers like it has something to prove. It stays 3–4 feet tall and about 2–3 feet wide, yet it covers itself in bright white blooms marked with a neat pink bar and softly ruffled edges. The red filaments and anthers add a punch of contrast that you can see from across a patio. Most striped clematis need more room and a taller support to look full; this one fills a small trellis fast and keeps the flowers close to eye level.
Expect a strong flush from late spring into early summer, then another round in late summer. Hummingbirds and butterflies find it quickly, and rabbits and deer tend to ignore it. Clematis ‘EviGsy157’ is part of Raymond Evison’s “Hope” series and was named from the Zulu word for “hope,” inspired by support for the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital Trust in Cape Town. The growth habit is polite, climbing by leaf petioles rather than sprawling wildly. Train it up an obelisk, let it brighten a short fence panel, or use it as a living accent beside your front steps.
Ithemba™ Clematis Care
Give Ithemba™ Clematis full sun to part shade, with at least six hours of light for best flowering in most gardens. Plant in fertile, well-drained soil and keep pH near neutral to slightly alkaline; add a small amount of garden lime if a soil test shows acidity. Set the crown 3–4 inches below soil level to protect dormant buds and improve long-term resilience. Water deeply during the first season, then keep moisture steady during bloom cycles without letting the root zone stay saturated. Feed in early spring when new shoots are a couple inches long with a low-nitrogen fertilizer such as 5-10-10, then follow with one light application of a balanced fertilizer about 4–6 weeks later if growth looks slow.
Prune Ithemba™ as a Group 3 clematis since it blooms on new wood. In late winter or early spring, cut stems back to strong buds 6–12 inches above the soil line. After the first heavy flush, a light trim can tidy the vine and encourage fresh flowering growth for late summer.
Ithemba™ Clematis Spacing
Space plants about 3 feet apart in landscape designs so each vine has room to branch and bloom from the base up. For container planting, use a pot 16–18 inches wide with a compact trellis or tripod installed at planting time.
We recommend Ithemba™ for balconies and tight garden corners where a big vine would feel like too much. In the garden, shade the root area with coral bells and lungwort for a cool, layered look. On a sunny patio, pair the pot with calibrachoa spilling at the rim and coleus for foliage contrast at the base.
