Azalea is the quintessential spring blooming shrub. Joseph Hill is an evergreen variety that can also be used as an impressive flowering ground cover. This Azalea is ultra- compact and hugs the ground with a profusion of large sized red blooms which attract not only insect pollinators, but hummingbirds as well. The blooms are long lasting and provide just the right pop of color as the spring bulbs make way for the summer perennials .

Evergreen Azaleas require very little upkeep, while providing a lot in return. This Azalea can be used as a ground cover in a woodland setting or to act as erosion control for a large sloping area. Planting this smaller Azalea on its own in a container is a great way to highlight how the large blooms contrast with the smaller leaves.

Joseph Hill Evergreen Azalea Care

Joseph Hill is a very low care shrub. Azaleas perform at their best in acidic soils of between 4.0-6.5. A moist and free draining soil is a must. A good mulch of leaves or organic compost in the fall will provide a little extra protection in case of an extra cold winter. Occasionally a slow release fertilizer formulated for acid loving plants can be used. An application after flowering in the early summer is all that is needed. Make sure to keep Azaleas well watered the first 2 years. After establishing, they will be quite drought tolerant.

Pruning is not much of an issue with Joseph Hill. A little deadheading after the blooms are done in the summer will keep the shrub looking tidy. Azaleas bloom best when there naturally mounded shape is encouraged instead of hard pruning into topiary shapes.

Joseph Hill Evergreen Azalea Spacing

Joseph Hill Azalea reaches a very compact 1 foot x 2 foot height while being able to spread out to 3 foot x 4 foot width. Mass planting of this low Azalea provides good ground cover when placed 3 feet on center.
