Sarracenia alabamensis is a rare, Federally endangered, southeast endemic pitcher plant, native to only 2-3 counties in Alabama. Sarracenia alabamensis was named by our friend and trillium guru, the late Fred Case of Michigan, who discovered it on his honeymoon in the 1940s…go Fred! Sarracenia alabamensis (related to Sarracenia rubra) produces a nice, spring and fall crop of showy golden pitchers. Topping the clump in early May before the pitchers emerge are stunning red fragrant flowers on a very floriferous clump. We’ve been dividing these from a single clone shared by plant conservationist Doug Walker, who obtained his from the Atlanta Botanical Garden plant conservation program.
