The stalks begin a rosy purple and darken as they mature. The flowers are fragrant and so are the leaves of this sage family member. Deer and rabbits ignore the plants, but hummingbirds, bees and butterflies love their nectar. Salvias can tolerate salt, so they make a practical and pretty low border along sidewalks or driveways.
