With a myriad of feathery plumes above delicate emerald foliage, Younique™ Ruby Red Astilbe adds height, color, and texture to containers, beds, and borders. Otherwise known as Astilbe x Younique™ Ruby Red (‘Versred’), this false goat’s beard grows to a height of 12-16 inches and width of 14-18 inches, making it ideal for small spaces. Younique™ Ruby Red Astilbe flowers in late spring and early summer, much earlier than other Astilbe ornamentals. The petite ruby-red florets rise out of a mound of fine foliage and attract butterflies and bees. 

Originating from Asia, Younique™ Ruby Red Astilbe is cold hardy in zones 3-8. With its compact, mound-forming habit, it works well planted in containers, whether alone as a specimen or as a thriller in a thriller-spiller-filler combination. In landscapes, plant several astilbes along shade borders and in rock, woodland, and shade gardens, multiplying the effect of their color. A deer-resistant plant, you don’t have to worry about critters eating your flowers late at night. Create stunning bouquets with its gorgeous plumes to enjoy during the summer or allow the flowers to dry for later use. 

Younique™ Ruby Red Astilbe Care

While tolerating full shade, Younique™ Ruby Red Astilbe thrives in partial sun, especially morning sun followed by afternoon shade. Plant during spring in moist, loamy, well-draining, slightly acidic soil. A pH in the vicinity of 6.0 is suitable. Amend poor soil with compost. Water whenever the top one to two inches of soil are dry. The ground should remain consistently moist. During spring, apply a low-nitrogen fertilizer such as a 5-10-10 to encourage better production of this astilbe’s florets.

A long blooming perennial, Younique™ Ruby Red Astilbe blooms once. As a result, deadheading, unless for appearance, is not needed. The dried flowers provide continued interest during the winter. If grown in a container, divide and transplant every 3 to 4 years.

Space each astilbe plant 14 to 18 inches apart in borders and beds. Excellent companion plants include azaleas, columbine, and hosta. Use the cut flower stems alone in a vase or mix with other cut flowers such as roses, peonies, and hydrangea.
